Brüno Review (2009)

Mature Audiences Only

Basic Plot

Bruno. Where do I even start. Our main character, Bruno, is a comically stereotypic gay, who was once big in the fashion industry, but loses his job due to a certain modeling mishap. The whole movie is about our hero trying some unique schemes in an attempt to become famous once again.

In-Depth

Bruno features the same actor from the hilariously offensive Borat, Sacha Baron Cohen. Many will say Bruno is far worse than Borat when it comes to the offensive humor, and I completely agree. It's not a bad thing though.
There were many very funny scenes. Particularly at the scene where he is with a group of rednecks in an attempt to become straight, which is a piece of advice given to him from his large-lipped (once gay) psychiatrist where Bruno points out his lips were meant for... well you know, S'in the D.

Bruno, raised in Austria, was at the top of the industry. He was the judge of what's in, and what's out. For example, I quote: "In: Autism. Aus: Chlamydia". When asked why Autism was in, the response was "Because it's funny".
When Bruno decides to wear a jumpsuit "made entirely out ov velcro", he begins clinging to seats, curtains and clothing while at a fashion show, and happens to fall into the runway wearing a wide array of various clothing items from behind the scenes that stuck to the suit. This leads to him losing his modeling job, and fame. He gets the idea to travel to LA with his assistant's assistant , Lutz (Gustaf Hammarsten) to begin his climb back to the top.

Attempting to become straight is just one of the ways he tries to regain his fame. He also adopts an African baby that he names OJ, dresses him in a shirt that reads "Gayby" and appears on a predominantly african-america talk show. Needless to say this brings him no fame.
He also tries to interview a celebrity in hopes he will gain fame once seen together with them on television. Most of them refuse the offer, except one, which still doesn't do anything useful.

Interview with Paula Abdul

Bruno uses this interview to make his own TV show, and by TV show I mean gay dancing, interview, more gay dancing then his penis flailing around the screen and rotating in circles on it's own. I thought this was hilarious and wished I could do that, but then the penis talked. Yeah, a talking phallus. You can guess this didn't go so well with the people rating the show. On to the next big idea.

Just one more before I end up describing the entire movie. Bruno gets the idea that if he can reunite large, opposing groups he can gain global coverage and become famous. Palestinians and the Israelis. He even interviews an actual terrorist in these scenes. Of course, one gay man can't end many years of serious conflict.

When I first saw the trailer for the movie, I was so excited to see another Borat-like movie. A friend and I saw it the first day and all I remember saying is "There was a LOT more gay in this movie than I had anticipated". I knew what the movie was about before I saw it, and I was expecting some of the homoerotic scenes. But, in the first 5 minutes, you see Bruno in one of these extreme scenes. This scene featured a bicycle-powered dildo, a slingshot chair (I'll let you decide how it works), and Brunos lover, Diesel (Clifford Bañagale) spinning in mid-air on Brunos... magic stick. And they finish the day off with champagne... from a bottle in Diesel's butt.

I'm sorry

The Good

•If you liked Borat, you will probably like Bruno.
•Hilarious cameos from all sorts of famous figures.
•The BEST awkward silence I have ever seen anywhere.
•Lots of peni- er, offensive humor, such as:
--•Mexican chairs. As in, Mexicans on all fours acting as chairs while Bruno does his interviews.

The Bad

•A lot more gay jokes, references and scenes than I could have imagined.
•Ron Paul didn't do it with Bruno.
•This review is going to kill any reputation I may of had.

The Verdict

Like I said, if you enjoyed Borat, you should check out Bruno. I don't recommend this one around the kids (or grandparents, for that matter). There's a good chance if they don't see all the nudity, they won't understand what's going on anyways.
If you haven't seen Borat, on the other hand, because it seemed like something you'd dislike, then there's a good chance you won't like Bruno, either. Watch the trailer, and see for yourself.
